Machine
Design
The
machine features a heavy-duty steel frame with cast iron
tabletop. The vertical travel of the cutting head, which
is also made of cast-iron, can be adjusted in two positions
depending on workpiece thickness, assuring fast and efficient
operation. When set to the lower setting, the complete
cutting cycle (trim cut and finish cut) is completed in
1.5 seconds!!!

The
machine is equipped with two cast-iron table extension leaves,
which are bolted to the main table. Steel pins provide accurate
alignment. Mounted on top of the table extension leaves
are anodized aluminum fence rails, which offer material
support and are used in conjunction with flip-stops to position
multiple cuts along a stile or rail. These fence rails are
also bolted and pinned to the table leaves.
A center stop assembly in the middle of the machine table
is used to position the rails for cope cuts. The solid aluminum
center stop bar slides in and out and is locked in place
with a thumbscrew. Interchangeable nylon center fittings
with fine adjustment screws are installed in the center
stop bar and are available in different widths, depending
on the nose knife used.
A nylon chip breaker is installed in the machine table.
The chip breaker protects the cutting edges of the knives
and also prevents any tear-out on the back of the workpiece.
Heavy aluminum blocks with two setscrews act as "cock-bead"
stops. These blocks are mounted on steel guide rails next
to the side knives. Once set, the stops limit the forward
travel of the cutting head and assure accurate notching
depths. Because the stops use the beaded edge of the moulding
as reference point, this design completely avoids to problems
associated with systems using the opposite moulding edge
instead. |

Knives
The
nose knives feature a machined v-groove in the back to
guarantee accurate alignment on the cutting head. In addition,
two counter sunk hex-head screws are used to mount the
nose knives to the tip of the cutting head.
The side knives are bolted to the head with heavy-duty
machine bolts. Slots in the knives allow for lateral adjustment
depending on the width of the nose knife. The side knives
are designed to be compatible with both the small and
large cutting heads for the NF series.

| All
MORSO knives are manufactured with custom-made Austrian
steel and are hardened to Rockwell 64. No other manufacturer
of miter cutting and notching equipment offers knives harder
than Rockwell 58! |
|
Notching
operation (stiles)
Upon adjusting the cock-bead stops to set the notching depth,
the moulding is placed on the machine table and one end
is rested against a flip-stop. Two safety buttons, located
at the left and right hand side of the machine table, are
pressed simultaneously to start the cutting cycle:
- Hydraulic
clamps secure the moulding against the fence rails
- The
cutting head advances toward the operator
- Upon
touching the moulding edge, sensors trigger two consecutive
downward strokes of the cutting head (trim cut and finish
cut)
- The
cutting head returns to its home position and the clamps
release the material
When
set to the lower setting, the complete cutting cycle (trim
cut and finish cut) is completed in 1.5 seconds
and the resulting cuts are smooth and free of tear-out.

Coping
operation (rails)
Upon adjusting the setscrews in the nylon center fitting,
the stop is moved toward the cutting head and locked in
place. The rail is placed on the table and pushed against
the stop. Both safety buttons are activated and the 45-degree
corner is cut. The moulding is then flipped end-for-end
and the process is repeated. |

Machine versions:
The NEH series machines are available in two versions,
the only difference being the capacity of the cutting
head:
NSEH = small cutting head for nose knives from ¼"
- 13/16" (6.0mm - 20.0mm)
NLEH = large cutting head for nose knives from ½"
- 1" (12mm - 26mm)
The
larger NLEH version is generally available from stock
because in most instances, the machines will be used for
beaded face-frames requiring nose knives up to 1"
width. However, to increase the range of applications,
we offer matched NSEH cutting heads with each machine.
These heads are fitted at the MORSO factory and can be
replaced in only minutes. The side knives fit on both
heads; only the nose knives differ in design. We highly
recommend the purchase of the smaller head to produce
haunch joints in window grills, cabinet door mullions,
etc.
The cast-iron NSEH head actually costs less than a second
pair of side knives!
